Deforestation: Saving Madagascar’s Forests

I was asked by National Geographic to write and edit a video on the deforestation issue in Madagascar. It was a huge undertaking. I was given hours of beautiful footage that had to be cut down to a short piece that addressed the main issues that are being faced on the African island.

Madagascar is one of the biggest islands in the world, containing thousands of species that are unique to only the island. This is in fact due to the island’s separation from the main continent of Africa, allowing the species to evolve with no outside influence; however, many of these species are being wiped out due to deforestation. There is less than 10% of the forests remaining in Madagascar, effecting the survival of not only the species but the people as well. The Malagasies rely on the forest for practically everything-farming, cooking, housing, etc…. And so the big question here is- how do we use the forest and save it?

Year of the Dragon
In the 13th arrondissement, among the high rises of Paris, resides a large Chinese community. The chinese population in France is the largest overseas community in Europe (if excluding Russia) and is steadily increasing. This day marked the end of the week long celebration of the Chinese New Year and the year of the dragon.

Nous Sommes les Gens! Libération sur l’Internet!
Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday, January 28, to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a US bill to allow law enforcement to stop online trafficking of copyrighted property. Many French citizens, mostly younger, showed their condemnation of the bill and took to the streets to tell the US as well as the French government that “we are the people and we want freedom of the internet!”.
